Exciting Changes Coming to Spokane, Washington
Spokane, Washington, is on the brink of significant developments that will shape the city's future. Whether you're considering a move to this vibrant area or are already a resident, it's crucial to stay informed about these transformative changes. In this blog post, we'll delve into five major updates that are bound to impact Spokane positively or negatively. By understanding and preparing for these changes, you can make the most of your experience in Spokane.
Expansion of Spokane International Airport
Transportation is a critical factor to consider when relocating, and Spokane International Airport is undergoing a substantial expansion. The current focus is on Concourse C, a 144,000 square foot addition costing $150 million. The expansion will introduce three new gates and an extended ticket booth area. This development aims to alleviate congestion and improve efficiency at the airport, which has experienced increased traffic due to Spokane's growing popularity. Furthermore, the project is expected to create approximately 1,200 jobs, contribute $87 million in household revenue, and generate $313 million in economic activity for Washington State.
The North South Freeway
After two decades of planning, the North South Freeway is nearing completion. This freeway will enhance connectivity and accessibility, particularly for those residing north of Spokane. Commuting to destinations such as Fairchild Air Force Base, Liberty Lake, or Post Falls will become more efficient as the freeway links Highway 395 to I-90. The current progress extends from Highway 395 to Hilliard, with future plans including a two-mile-long, 66-foot-tall sky bridge crossing the Spokane River and the industrial park. The completion date is projected to be around 2030, with construction set to begin in the next two years.
Mead Works
A New Greenstone Community: Renowned local builder Greenstone is introducing an exciting development called Mead Works. Situated on over 300 acres in the Mead Neighborhood, Mead Works will encompass a vibrant town center reminiscent of Kendall Yards. The community will feature up to 1,400 living units, including single-family homes, multi-family apartments, 55+ housing, townhomes, office spaces, and retail outlets. Green spaces, parks, and walking trails will also be incorporated into the design. Mead Works' prime location, nestled between the Newport Highway and the North Spokane Corridor, offers convenient access to the forthcoming North South Freeway.
United Soccer League (USL) Teams
Spokane is eagerly anticipating the arrival of professional soccer through the United Soccer League. A state-of-the-art soccer stadium is currently under construction in downtown Spokane, adjacent to the Spokane Arena. As one of only eight franchises in the USL Super League, Spokane will host both men's and women's teams. This addition is expected to boost tourism and further elevate the community's passion for sports, joining the already beloved Spokane Chiefs (hockey) and Spokane Indians (baseball). With the recent development of the podium and soccer stadium, there's even hope for Spokane to become a future host of the Summer Olympics.
Expo 74 Anniversary
In 2024, Spokane will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Expo 74, the World's Fair that put the city on the map. Riverfront Park, the legacy of Expo 74, has since become a popular destination. The upcoming month-long celebration in May and June 2024 will showcase Spokane's growth and achievements over the past five decades. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, tourism in Spokane remains resilient, with $1.4 billion spent in the city in the previous year. Future projects, such as the gorge loop trail and the extension of the Central Library, promise to enhance Spokane's allure as a tourist destination.
Spokane, Washington, is undergoing significant changes that will shape its future and provide new opportunities for residents and visitors alike. From the expansion of Spokane International Airport to the completion of the North South Freeway, the development of Mead Works, the arrival of USL soccer teams, and the upcoming Expo 74 anniversary celebration, the city is evolving rapidly. By staying informed and embracing these changes, you can fully embrace the benefits they bring and make the most of your experience in Spokane.
