Spokane Symphony Masterworks 9: Tales of Hemingway

The Spokane Symphony wraps up its Masterworks season with a sweeping, story-driven concert that transports audiences from the streets of Rome to the pages of Hemingway. Held at the iconic Fox Theater, this final installment in the Masterworks series is a powerful celebration of imagination, movement, and emotion through sound.
At the heart of this concert is the return of Grammy-winning cellist Zuill Bailey, whose performance of Tales of Hemingway helped him secure one of classical music’s highest honors. This deeply expressive work, composed by Michael Daugherty, draws inspiration from four of Ernest Hemingway’s most iconic stories—bringing them to life through dynamic orchestration and riveting cello solos.
Complementing the program is Ottorino Respighi’s “Pines of Rome”, a lush, cinematic suite evoking everything from playful scenes in the Villa Borghese gardens to the awe-inspiring grandeur of Roman legions marching the Appian Way.
